A Divorce He Regrets

Chapter 274

Chapter 274:

Through hiccups and tears, Faith asked, “Why do you think Raina was there?”

I couldn’t help but answer, her quaking hands in mine as she struggled to steady herself. “Because Raina ran away from home—Nathan caught up with her—and Alex…”

I didn’t finish because Alex interrupted forcefully. “This destroys everything! The intention was to rescue them together. I couldn’t prevent Raina from heading there, so I had to use her to get us out of this mess. And now, how do I go about—”

His words stung deep, like a lash. I felt the nasty reality bite deep in my gut. I looked into Faith’s bloodshot eyes and asked, “Did you not see Raina?”

Shaking her head, she whispered softly, “Raina never arrived.”

I was frustrated and argued, “Perhaps those men were deceiving you, Alex,” but he interrupted quickly, “No way. I had something on them—they wouldn’t risk their families. It doesn’t make sense.”

A flood of hopelessness swept over me on top of my rage until, at last, I shouted, “Enough! Faith must rest, and Caleb needs his mother.”noveldrama

I attempted to keep my voice at a minimum as I ushered her away from the heated argument.

Alex stayed downstairs while I escorted Faith up to her bedroom. In either case, my heart ached from knowing that Alex’s carefully laid plan had been desecrated. As we arrived at her room, Faith shoved me aside in desperation and ran to Caleb’s crib, where our sleeping son rested, his soft, innocent breathing a bitter reminder of everything we stood to lose. “He’s okay,” I whispered to her as I supported her trembling form. “Alex and I took turns taking care of him.” Then, with a concerned sigh, Faith gently proposed, “Perhaps now wouldn’t be a bad time to leave—not without Raina, of course.”

I took a deep breath and gazed at Faith, whose eyes were tired but set with determination. “Faith, why don’t you just take a moment to rest?” I urged in a low, concern-filled voice. “Go wash your face, put on a different shirt—just take a minute for yourself.” She paused, looking over toward Caleb’s crib where our child lay sleeping. Hesitantly, she nodded and left the room.

I stood in the silence for a moment longer, then proceeded to check on Caleb. I discovered him awake, his small eyes fluttering open. When Faith came back, she sat beside him, cradling him with a fragile, gentle smile. I watched the both of them, my heart sinking in relief and sadness. That calm moment—her soft, quiet murmur as she rocked Caleb, the glint of hope in her weepy eyes—I swore to myself quietly that I would fix it, that we would get our family back together.

Towards evening, I finally made my way to the room just as Faith was finishing tucking Caleb back into his crib. The gentle, soothing cooing of my sleeping son was the only noise in that peaceful room, and for a second, I allowed myself a temporary break from the turmoil of the day. I crept over and knelt next to Faith, softly asking, “Are you alright?”

Her red, exhausted eyes met mine; she smiled weakly and whispered that she was alright—she hadn’t anticipated being home so early, it seemed. But I couldn’t shake the sick fear in my stomach.

“Did Nathan do something to you?” I asked, my voice a low growl of concern.

Faith shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper as she spoke. “No, he ensured I received the finest care possible there. But if Raina is still in his possession, then the less likely he’d ever release her. He has the place heavily guarded—a whole legion to secure his prize.”

Resolution and aggravation fought inside me, and I told Faith, “Then we will go find more men and rescue my sister.”

I rose to my feet, the resolution in my blood hardening step by step as I bolted outside, my heart racing with the urgency of it all.

Suddenly, I heard the weak voice of Faith calling me as she ran behind me. “Dom, wait!” she pleaded, trembling in her voice with hope and fear.
