Chapter 277
Chapter 277:
I tried to protest, my voice growing in indignation, “But—”
He shook his head slowly, as if pitying my inability to see the bigger picture. “If we allow ourselves to get blinded by rage and chaos, Nathan wins. We have to remain focused, in control—no matter if it takes swallowing our pride.”
I turned away from him, my head reeling at the significance of his words. I whispered, trying to fight down a wave of frustration and anger. “I can’t believe I’m saying this,” I said. “If Nathan’s stringing us along like this, then we’re all in serious trouble—and I feel so powerless.”
I stood there with my heart pounding, while Dominic immediately took out his phone and began making frantic calls, issuing tough orders that his men were to escort Alex.
Dominic and I headed for Graham Corporation, and I held Caleb close to me as we stepped out into the mayhem of the street. A group of reporters stood waiting outside, cameras flashing like hot fireflies. Their voices blended into a clamor of questions.
“Does Mr. Dominic’s father have an illegitimate son?” one yelled, while another called out, “Do you even know if he has other kids?”
So many questions made me uncomfortable, but before I could be stunned, Dominic moved forward, standing before me like a barricade. His presence was a reassuring wall as security officers pushed us into the building, out of sight. Inside, the atmosphere shifted to an uncomfortable calm. Dominic led me to one of the conference rooms.
“Stay here,” he instructed, his tone firm but protective. “I’ll have security at the door.”
Before leaving, he paused and drew me into a brief embrace, his lips pressing a gentle kiss against my forehead—a silent promise of safety. He even leaned down to kiss Caleb’s head, and the soft cooing of my little boy momentarily eased the turmoil inside me.
The moment he left, the silence in the room was shattered by muffled sounds.
I stepped out of the conference room, the shouting and raised voices coming from Dominic’s office echoing down the hallway like a persistent reminder of our crumbling plans. While I was confident that Dominic would clean up his side of the mess, an insistent, nagging desire to call Alex wouldn’t allow me to let it go. My mind was a whirl of fear and desperation—every idea filled with terror for Raina and the question of whether or not we would ever be able to escape it.

I made it to the…
My heart was racing so wildly that I could’ve sworn everyone in the hall could hear it. For a moment, I stood there, questioning the danger of leaving the room to locate a telephone. I whispered to myself, “I’ll ask the receptionist—I’ll be back before Dominic is done,” desperately trying to convince my racing thoughts that a brief absence wouldn’t cost us dearly.
My heart thundered in my ears as I crossed the room toward the counter, still mired in panic and chaotic thoughts. But before I could even request a phone, the door was flung open.
I stood there, paralyzed, as I saw him—the detective who had already taken me away—standing in the doorway. His presence was infuriating and unsettling.
His thin lips twisted into a sneer that sent shivers down my spine. “Well, well, Faith,” he slurred, his voice full of sarcasm as he lounged insolently in the doorframe. “Didn’t think I’d run into you wandering around, huh?”
My stomach coiled itself into knots of fear and anger as I struggled to stand against the tide that was rising too fast.
I gritted my teeth and forced my voice into solidity, though it trembled when I snapped, “What do you want?”
His smile grew, and I sensed his predatory satisfaction as he moved deeper into the reception area.
