Dan was gasping for breath.

Right now, standing before him, Yvonne looked every bit the judge and jury. And he—well, he couldn't get a single word out in his defense.

She... yeah. She wasn't stupid. Not one bit.

The first time Dan met Yvonne, he'd known she was sharp as a tack. That's why, every move he made around her, he was extra careful.

But now, with Dan clamming up in front of her, Yvonne's voice turned into a low, growling demand. "Answer me."

Scar burst into the room just in time to find Yvonne with her hand clamped tight around Dan's throat, squeezing harder and harder.

He rushed forward, desperate to pull her off. "Ms. Quinn, you can't do this to our boss!"

"Bang!" Before he could even react, Yvonne's boot connected with Scar and sent him crashing to the floor.

Fury radiated from Yvonne, and it seemed to give her even more strength. Scar hit the ground hard, groaning.

Yvonne's grip on Dan's neck only tightened. Scar looked over, panic in his eyes, at Dan's calm, almost resigned face. "Sir!" he shouted.

But Dan just kept his eyes locked on Yvonne, neither fighting back nor looking away.

He was gambling-gambling on whatever feelings Yvonne might still have for him, hoping that maybe, just maybe, she'd hesitate.

He searched her eyes for even a flicker of mercy, maybe a little heartbreak, or regret.

Nothing.

He found nothing he'd hoped for. Just cold resolve. The pressure on his throat increased.

Scar leapt at Yvonne again, this time wild with desperation. That finally pried her off Dan.

Scar was fiercely loyal. If Yvonne was trying to kill Dan, then Scar had no reason to hold anything back. "You witch!" he spat.noveldrama

The words barely left his mouth before Yvonne drove her boot straight into his knee. She was too fast-Scar never stood a chance. He collapsed to the ground, clutching his leg in agony.

Dan just sat there on the hospital bed, silent.

Yvonne's eyes flicked back to him, dark and murderous. Dan's breath came quick and shallow. "You really gonna kill me?"

She'd nearly beaten him senseless when she thought he'd slept with her. And now, after finding out he was the one pulling the strings at Black Gate, she actually wanted him dead?

Of course.

The look in her eyes wasn't pain or regret it was pure, lethal rage.

Yvonne narrowed her eyes. "You deserve it."

Dan's breath hitched. At those words, his heart seemed to drop through the floor.

He let out a shaky laugh. "Yeah? I deserve to die..."

His whole body trembled. "Yvonne, what makes you trust Xander so damn much? What kind of fairy tales did he sell you?"

Judging by her clothes, she must've just come back from Yoreland. And the first thing she did was come after him? Where the hell was Xander?

The more he thought about it, the angrier he got.

Yvonne's face twisted with disgust as a whip, she slapped

filth you left behind years ago."

Because of who she was, Yvonne never tolerated anyone approaching her with hidden motives.

And Dan, well, he really took the cake. "Still playing the amnesia card? You think that's funny?"

Without another word, Yvonne drew her gun and pointed it straight at Dan. Scar's face went pale. "Boss!"

Yvonne's eyes glittered with danger.

Dan's breath caught. The second Yvonne squeezed the trigger, he rolled off the bed, dodging the shot.

The gunshot echoed through the hospital, sending Dan's bodyguards and the security team running to the room.

Yvonne sneered, watching Dan scramble. "I thought you weren't afraid of dying."

Dan's face was ashen. She'd actually pulled the trigger...

His heart hammered against his ribs, his breathing even more ragged.
