Chapter 811 Hopes Shattered
Ruby didn't know how to respond, but luckily Phoebe's attention was on Evelyn and didn't notice her unease. She stammered, "Well, that's not bad either."
Phoebe glanced at her but was quickly distracted by Evelyn's wailing. She felt a pang of worry, "What should we do if she keeps crying like this? The doctor said she has a concussion and can't get too emotional."
Ruby was also worried, "What should we do? Should we try to comfort her again?"
Phoebe shook her head, thinking that if they tried to comfort her again, Evelyn might cry even harder tonight. "Forget it, let her vent her emotions. Maybe she's crying tears of joy."
Before she finished speaking, a pillow hit Phoebe on the head. She quickly grabbed the fallen pillow and looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn's eyes were red from crying, and she glared at Phoebe fiercely, "Are you gloating?"
Phoebe looked innocent, "How could I be? Are you hungry from crying? How about eating something first? Ruby's cooking was delicious today; I ate a lot earlier."
Evelyn was very angry, "I'm feeling so awful, and you can still eat?"
Phoebe replied, "I get hungry if I skip a meal."
Evelyn couldn't argue with that. She sulked for a while, but her stomach kept growling, so she had to get out of bed.
Ruby quickly went over to serve her some food and took the dishes out of the thermal container. "Evelyn, see if the food is cold. If it is, I'll heat it up in the microwave."
Evelyn calmed down a bit and felt a little embarrassed seeing Ruby busying herself. She said, "Ruby, take a break."
"I'm not tired," Ruby said, looking at Evelyn. "Evelyn, this is a good thing. No matter what, being alive is a good thing, right?"
Evelyn paused for a second while chewing, then continued eating as if nothing had happened.
Seeing that Evelyn seemed to have listened, Ruby sighed in relief and said, "Evelyn, I don't want to make you sad, but if Donovan came back to life, I would be overjoyed."
"You're good at comforting people," Evelyn sighed. "If Donovan were still alive, I would be overjoyed too."
Ruby looked at her, her lips moved as if she was about to tell her that Donovan was still alive, but she remembered what Donovan had said and swallowed her words.
Phoebe noticed that Ruby had managed to calm Evelyn down with just a few words. She felt a bit jealous but also knew she shouldn't be.
Having someone help comfort Evelyn should make her happy.
After Evelyn finished eating, she regained some strength, and her mind started to clear. She turned to Phoebe seriously, "Did you know your dad was alive all along?"
"No! If I had known earlier, I would have told you," Phoebe protested. She had only found out that afternoon that Harper was her father.
Now she understood why Milton had invested in her unconditionally. It wasn't because he admired her, but because Harper was her biological father.
Evelyn looked at her suspiciously. Phoebe met her gaze openly. After a few seconds, Evelyn looked away, "I'll believe you for now."
After that, Evelyn didn't mention Harper again. Phoebe didn't know what she was thinking and didn't dare to ask. She called Ruby out and asked her to comfort Evelyn.
Ruby agreed and told her to go rest. "I'll stay here at the hospital. You should go back and spend time with the kids. They haven't seen you for two days, and they were asking about you this afternoon."
Phoebe thought that since Ruby had stayed at the hospital last night, it should be her turn today, but Ruby insisted she go back to rest.
So she went in to tell Evelyn and then left with the thermal container.
In the president's office of the Reynolds Group, Lawton knocked on the door with a stack of documents. Theodore was standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, one hand in his pocket and the other holding a cigarette.
The streetlights outside cast a solitary shadow on his back.
Lawton tightened his grip on the investigation report, feeling a pang of sympathy for Theodore.
"Mr. Reynolds, this is the investigation report on Ms. Ziegler."
The cigarette in Theodore's hand was deformed from his grip. He took the report, put the cigarette in his mouth, and started reading.
Knowing that Phoebe had triplets that weren't his, he felt not only anger but also a sense of disbelief. Why?
They had been together for over four years, and their sex life had always been frequent. In the last year, he hadn't used any contraception. Why couldn't Phoebe get pregnant?
And yet, she had triplets with a male escort!
His male pride and competitive spirit made him unwilling to accept this. He needed proof that the male escort wasn't better than him, just luckier.
The report stated that after their divorce, Phoebe had been taking medication to regulate her body. Could it be that the medication had worked?
Theodore continued reading with a sense of resentment. After their divorce, Phoebe had been busy sending out resumes and looking for jobs. How did she have time to find a male escort?
She really couldn't stand being alone!
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, and his face grew darker.
The rest of the report detailed Phoebe's prenatal check-up dates. She had used Cindy's
ID in Kedora, but after moving to Caneda, she used her own identity.
So she had used Cindy's ID for prenatal check-ups in Kedora to prevent him from
finding out about the children and forcing her to abort them?
The thin sheet of paper contained information that made Theodore furious all over again.
Attached to the investigation report was a check-up report from a hospital in Caneda, detailing the dates, the age of the children, and their growth conditions.
Medical records couldn't be faked, and neither could the dates. The triplets were indeed not his.
Theodore leaned against the floor-to-ceiling window, the night outside making him look particularly lonely and sad. His last shred of hope was shattered.
He let out a bitter laugh, feeling a deep sense of sorrow.
At that moment, he felt an urge to cry but didn't want to lose composure in front of his subordinate. He said in a choked voice, "Leave me alone for a while."
Lawton looked at him with concern.
He had been by Theodore's side for many years. The last time he saw him this despondent was after his divorce from Phoebe.
He had seemed unaffected, but in reality, he had been like a shell of a person. Lawtonnoveldrama
had feared he wouldn't make it through, but he eventually did.
But today's situation... it wasn't really Phoebe's fault. They were divorced, so she was
free to do as she pleased. But they had only been divorced for a month, and she had slept with another man.
Proud as Theodore was, how could he not be hurt?
At that time, he hadn't yet recovered from the pain and shadow of the divorce, while Phoebe was already enjoying her new life.
What do you think?
