Chapter 2497
"Fishing?"noveldrama
Wilbur turned to see a handsome middle-aged man sitting by the lake, fishing. Wilbur had never seen this man before. After scrutinizing him for a moment, Wilbur asked, puzzled, "Were you speaking to me just now?"
The man shrugged with a hint of helplessness and glanced around, replying, "It seems it's just the two of us here. So, are you here to fish too?"
"Fishing? No."
Wilbur instinctively shook his head. Although he sensed danger in the presence of the middle-aged man, the familiar surroundings dulled his sense of battle readiness.
"I'm not here to fish. You must be mistaken."
"If you're not fishing, then what are you doing here?"
The man's tone was casual, almost curious.
"I... Isn't this the magical tower?" Wilbur responded, regaining his senses. "And who are you? Why are you here?"
The middle-aged man smiled faintly, handed Wilbur a fishing rod, and said, "I'm about to cook a pot of fresh fish soup. If you help me catch three fish, I'll tell you everything you want to know."
"But..."
"No buts. Otherwise, you can wait here alone in solitude."
Wilbur was taken aback. The man firmly placed the fishing rod in his hands, patted his shoulder, and then continued fishing with a friendly smile. Wilbur observed the man closely, noting that he seemed to have no aura of a cultivator and his demeanor was unthreatening, almost amiable.
Since the magical tower was known to bring about fated encounters, perhaps those he met here were meant to cross his path. Given the circumstances, Wilbur decided it was best to follow the man's suggestion. He could remain cautious and ready to act if anything went awry.
Taking a deep breath, Wilbur said, "Alright, I'll help you catch three fish."
"The fish here aren't easy to catch. It's all about luck. Once, there was someone who fished here for three years and didn't catch a single fish. Hmph, as for you, I'll give you just one day. If you can't catch three fish by then, it means we're not destined to meet, and I won't bother answering your questions anymore."
"What? Three years without catching a single fish?" Wilbur was astonished. "Do you know about me?"
The middle-aged man chuckled softly and said, "You should focus on fishing for now."
Realizing the man was not going to reveal more, Wilbur stifled his curiosity and turned his attention to fishing.
An hour later, Wilbur caught his first fish. The middle-aged man glanced at it but said nothing. After another half hour, Wilbur reeled in a second fish. Again, the man remained silent. As evening approached, Wilbur still had not caught the third fish.
The man looked at the setting sun and remarked, "The sun is setting, and I'll be leaving soon. It would seem that there's not enough fate between us."
"Not necessarily. I might still catch one more fish," Wilbur retorted, determined.
"Give up, young man. Your chance has passed," the man said, almost sympathetically.
At that moment, a splash broke the silence. Wilbur yanked the rod, pulling up a foot-long white carp.
What do you think?
