Chapter 992: Simple Conditions
Chapter 992: Chapter 992: Simple Conditions
Bai Xiao and He Xin’s room is quite small, containing just two bamboo beds and a table, nothing else. A dim bulb, which might not even be five watts, sways in the night breeze. Once adjusted to the dim light, she notices each side of the small room has a simple wooden window panel that can be pushed out and propped open with a stick.
She opens the window, and the damp air rushes in. Compared to the previous stifling dark, the room finally feels a bit pleasant.
But it also appears simpler.
Aside from a table that is roughly similar to the other items, there’s no furniture in the room. One of the table legs is broken, and it leans awkwardly in the corner.
The best things inside the room, aside from intact walls, are the two beds.
Though they creak loudly when you sit on them, at least they don’t have to sleep on the ground. noveldrama
The bedding is neatly arranged on the beds.
It looks well-laundered, but the patches on it are quite noticeable.
The little girl seems a bit embarrassed, bringing over a washbasin and a pale yellow towel.
"You can wash up. Just give me the clothes you change out of, and I’ll wash them for you."
There’s a hint of eagerness in her voice.
Bai Xiao shakes his head, "What’s your name? I’m Bai Xiao, call me Doctor Bai!"
The girl immediately gets excited; her eyes sparkling and cheeks flushing.
"I’m Xiaoyu, Lun Xiaoyu, the nurse here—kind of a doctor too. We do a bit of everything here; it’s not really that specific."
The city doctors are truly beautiful and friendly; they don’t show any disdain and speak so gently to her.
"Xiaoyu, you and Dean Lun are...?"
Lun Jianguo, Lun Xiaoyu—it sounds like one family.
Lun Xiaoyu smiles, revealing a dimple, "Doctor Bai, Lun Jianguo is my father. I’ve always learned medical skills from him. Originally, my father was a barefoot doctor. We live in too remote an area for doctors to come here. All the villages around us are ethnically diverse, and this is one of the poorest regions here. If my father were to leave, the people here would suffer even more.
Eventually, the government backed the transition from barefoot doctors to official doctor positions. My father became the dean of the only township hospital here. Gradually, we got some doctors, all of whom, like my father, were barefoot doctors from nearby villages. We’re too poor here; no one wants to come. A few years ago, a few city Medical College graduates did come.
But none of them stayed for long. You are really the only group of genuine hospital doctors to come here. You wouldn’t believe it, Doctor Bai, even before you arrived, my dad was overjoyed. You guys are true doctors compared to us barefoot doctors and are so much more advanced."
The young girl was so excited that she didn’t quite know what she wanted to express.
Bai Xiao chuckles, "Xiaoyu, don’t praise us like we’re perfect; we’re just ordinary doctors like your father. We’re not extraordinary. We’ve had professional training in the city, so our studies might be more solid than your father’s, but that doesn’t mean we can surpass him in dealing with complex cases. You must know your father has held on here for so many years, and the patients and cases he’s encountered surpass what we city doctors have seen."
Xiaoyu is suddenly shy because she never thought her father could be a doctor who compares to these city doctors.
She always felt he was a stubborn and inflexible person. He’d stubbornly stayed here for so many years, even without any money, even if he had to give all his monthly salary to patients, he stayed.
She almost thought her father was a fool.
And a fool who had no idea what he was doing.
But it’s the first time someone spoke of her father’s greatness in front of her, especially these people who seemed completely different, like they were from another world. The way these doctors were dressed and looked was entirely different from them.
Yet this Doctor Bai said that they were just like her father, not much nobler.
Suddenly, her father’s image in her heart became more heroic.
She purses her lips and smiles, "Doctor Bai, Doctor He, clean up and change clothes, I’ll prepare some food for you so you can eat and rest, you’ve had a hard journey."
Then she quickly leaves, closing the door behind for them.
Bai Xiao and He Xin can finally sit down and rest for a moment.
But neither rests; they are all covered in mud because the road was all dirt paths, twisted and winding, unsure of how far they walked. Add the post-rain condition; these paths were more pits of mud than roads.
So, trudging all the way, they look at each other covered in mud like they crawled out of mud piles.
They laugh at each other’s appearance. freew\ebno\vel..(c)om
Each grabs water to quickly clean themselves and change clothes.
Xiaoyu thoughtfully leaves two buckets outside the door, filled with hot water. Presumably, she knew they’d need water conveniently.
Bai Xiao changes into pants and a short-sleeve floral shirt, using her towel to wring her wet hair.
He Xin struggles for some time without achieving her ideal result.
There’s no condition for bathing here, and certainly no shower.
She finally understands why her uncle calls her unaware of how fortunate she is.
The conditions here are indeed tough.
Once they’re ready, they leave the room. Xiaoyu is already waiting outside, swiftly taking the basins from their hands, pouring the water into the bucket, then carrying it right away.
Giving them no chance to be self-reliant.
Bai Xiao smiles; despite being the dean’s daughter, she seemed diligent and quick with tasks.
Xiaoyu leads them outside—they then realize that Doctor Zhang and his team are living next door.
The two rooms are adjacent, and due to the bamboo structure, which has poor soundproofing, any noise at night might wake the neighbors.
The three men cleaned up much more efficiently than them.
Xiaoyu led them to the main hall on the second floor.
Only then did they realize it was a kitchen.
However, the kitchen is very basic.
There’s a charcoal basin on the ground, likely for cooking with it, otherwise, the bamboo building might burn.
Wood is burning in the charcoal basin, with a rack on top holding a pot.
A dim large iron pot.
Dean Lun is presently scooping food out of the pot.
A small table made of bamboo is surrounded by a few small stools.
A large basin on the table holds an indistinct dish with a few slices of greasy meat.
Everyone is served a bowl of rice and placed on the table.
"Come on, you must be hungry, please eat, please eat. We don’t have much here. Just something to fill your stomach before you rest." Dean Lun calls them over.
What do you think?
