Conroy was at a loss for words, but he wasn’t about to take three tubes of blood from his precious daughter.

He rolled up his sleeves and settled onto the sofa.

“Just do it,” he said. “And tell Bryan it’s the blood of you and your parents.”

Early summer had arrived, but Alverton still clung to its chill, especially in the mornings.

Eileen, bundled in a wool overcoat, huddled in the backseat, shivering and drowsy, her head resting on Bryan’s shoulder.

The car came to an abrupt halt. Raymond lowered the back window, and Jessica hurried over.

Jessica’s view was limited; she could only make out Bryan’s form and a glimpse of Eileen’s hair, but she couldn’t see Eileen’s position in the car.

Gabriela, still nestled in Bryan’s arms, waved excitedly, further obscuring Jessica’s view.

Jessica pulled three tubes of blood from her bag.

“This is the blood from my parents and me, Mr. Dawson. Please let me know the results as soon as you can after the test.”

“Okay,” Bryan replied, taking the tubes and glancing at her smooth arms, devoid of any needle marks.

It was freezing outside, but Jessica was only wearing a sleeveless dress. She clearly wasn’t bothered by the cold.

“So… can we grab lunch together?” Jessica said, looking at Bryan with hopeful eyes.

Bryan put the blood samples in the car’s glove box, not even looking up.

“Sorry, but no. I’ve got work to do.”

He gave Raymond a look, and Raymond rolled up the window.

Raymond offered Jessica an apologetic smile as he did that.

The car pulled into the underground parking. Bryan stared at the blood samples and then said, “Later, take these to the hospital. Have them check if it’s even human blood.”

Raymond was stunned.

“They’re trying to trick me, so they’re no better than animals,” Bryan scoffed.

Raymond finally understood Bryan’s intentions. “Mr. Dawson, you tricked them into giving blood for a paternity test, so of course they’ll fight back.”

But Bryan’s eyes grew cold, and Raymond felt a chill run down his spine, rendering him incapable of finishing his sentence.

Raymond shivered. “Never mind. We’re at the company. We can leave the car here. I’ll take a cab to the hospital.”

He unbuckled his seatbelt and quickly exited the car. It was quiet now, except for Eileen’s breathing and the sound of Gabriela playing with her toy.

“Go ahead and laugh if you want,” Bryan suddenly said.

Eileen burst out laughing, burying her face in his arms. “You’re actually right. They can’t be reasoned with, so you have no choice but to trick them.”
