The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 434

But now, it was crystal clear that Charles was standing up for that troublesome Evelyn. If Dahlia pushed it, she'd just end up ticking Charles off, and she wasn't about to make that mistake. So, even though she was boiling inside, she kept her cool and said, "Charles, you're right. Evelyn probably lost her cool because she was having a rough day."

"I won't call the cops, but after what she did to me, asking for an apology isn't too much, right?" Dahlia asked, acting like she was all innocent, but really, she had other plans. She couldn't get Evelyn thrown in jail, but making her apologize to the very person who had caused so much pain in her life? That would sting.

Charles glanced at Dahlia's swollen face. Evelyn had really gone to town on her. Given the state Dahlia was in, just asking for an apology seemed more than fair. Charles nodded, agreeing with her. He then turned his attention to Evelyn, who was about to hop in the car with Brooks, and marched over, ready to pull her

away.

Seeing how chummy she was with Brooks made his blood boil. Brooks quickly moved in front of Evelyn, blocking Charles. "Mr. Jenkins, please mind your manners," Brooks said coolly.

Charles shot Brooks a frosty glare, ignoring him as his eyes landed on Evelyn. "Evelyn, come with me and apologize to Dahlia," he insisted. An apology should wrap this up.

"And why should Evelyn apologize?" Brooks shot back, his eyes icy as he stared Charles down. The words "my Evelyn" really got under Charles's skin. Evelyn was his, and no one else's.

Seeing Brooks stand in the way, Dahlia, simmering with rage, couldn't hold back. "Mr. Brooks, you saw Evelyn attack me. Isn't it fair for Charles to ask for an apology?"

"I didn't see a thing," Brooks replied, a smirk tugging at his lips. "You say Eve hit you, but I could just as easily say you did it to yourself."noveldrama

"Are you out of your mind? Why would I do this to myself?" Dahlia's chest tightened with anger at Brooks's words.

"Who knows? When a mad dog goes wild, who can say if it might bite itself?"

Brooks, always the gentleman, had been taught never to be rude to a lady. But in Dahlia's case, her behavior made her unworthy of such respect.

Meanwhile, Evelyn had already slipped into the car. Brooks didn't waste any more words. He got in, started the car, and drove off, leaving Dahlia behind, her face a mask of fury. Brooks had the nerve to call her a dog! What really got to her was that Charles didn't immediately jump to her defense. He'd stopped her from calling the police, and Brooks had stopped Charles from hassling Evelyn. She'd been battered and didn't even get an apology! It was maddening!

At the hospital, Charles brought Dahlia in and had a doctor tend to the bruises on her face. He didn't stay with her, though; instead, headed to the ward to be

Sandy. After Dahlia's w with net

were

treated, she was about to head back

to the ward when she bumped into Sandy's main doctor.

"Ms. Dahlia, good news," the doctor said. "We've got a promising lead on a kidney

donor for your daughter."

With Charles not around, Dahlia

didn't bother with the act, and her face showed little excitement. "Here's the info on the matched donor the doctor continued. Since Charles had spoken with them beforehand, they didn't hide the donor's identity. They handed the details directly to Dahlia.

She casually flipped through the papers, but when she saw who the match was, her expression shifted dramatically. A sly, almost wicked glint danced in her eyes. She never would've guessed the match would be...
