Chapter 1464
When Summer saw Mirabella standing there, she wasn't surprised at all. She paused for two seconds before heading towards the entrance.
"This place doesn't welcome you." Summer's face was expressionless, perhaps due to the huge changes that had befallen the Gilbert family, she seemed much more mature now, lacking the youthful pride and arrogance she once had.
However, her dislike for Mirabella remained unchanged.
Mirabella's gaze swept over the black mourning band on Summer's arm, then looked at her calmly, "I just want to see Grandma and then I'll leave."
"Grandma?" Summer scoffed sarcastically, "Where were you when the dear woman was calling out your name day and night? You couldn't even show your filial piety by being there for her in her final moments. What right do you think you have to see her now?"
Mirabella's fingers tightened, and a lock of hair fell across her forehead, but she didn't bother to brush it away, maintaining her gaze on Summer, repeating, "I just want to see her and then I'll leave."
"That's impossible. Stop dreaming." Summer was very firm, "If you had any conscience, you'd let her pass peacefully without disturbing her. After all, you're not really one of us, a Gilbert. Whether you see her or not makes no difference."
"I just want to look, then I'll leave." Mirabella faced Summer's difficulty without a trace of anger, her demeanor almost humbly unlike herself.
James, standing nearby, felt a pang of pain seeing this. He stepped forward, his expression stern, "She's just here to pay her respects to Catherine. Is the Gilbert family really going to be so heartless?"
Summer met James's cold gaze and almost instinctively looked away, unable to hold his stare.
She knew who he was—from the prestigious Shepherd family, a family they dare not provoke.
If she refused Mirabella entry today, the Davis family might not react, but
offending the Shepherd family could very well mean cutting off their own future prospects.
Biting her lip, Summer weighed her options and eventually stepped aside to make way.
James turned back to Mirabella, "Let's go."
Mirabella gave a soft hum of acknowledgment and stepped into the yard.
As she and James entered, Mandy came out from the house and immediately
frowned upon seeing Mirabella, "Who allowed you in?"
Although Summer was also
displeased about letting Mirabella in, reason made her quickly approach Mandy, grabbing her arm and whispering a few words.
Finally, Mandy, holding back her irritation, said nothing more and walked away.
Mirabella glanced at Summer before heading to the bedroom where Catherine lay.
Catherine was dressed in her funeral attire, lying peacefully on the bed as if merely asleep.
Mirabella walked over stiffly, watching for a long while before slowly sitting down beside the bed.
This woman who had given her over a decade
f warmth had passed
away even though they had plans
not long ago for Mirabella to stay
with the Davis family for a while.
Mirabella gently adjusted Catherine's already neat clothes, her face pale and composed.
She didn't speak, just gazed unblinkingly at Catherine's peaceful visage.
Seeing this, James sighed softly, knowing that anything he said now wouldn't be heard by Mirabella. He then turned and left the room, gently closing the door behind him to give Mirabella some space.noveldrama
Outside in the hallway, Summer was standing there. She saw James coming out,
her eyelashes fluttering down as she walked over to him.
What do you think?
