Unhinged Omega: A Dark Reverse Harem Omegaverse Romance (Ghost Alpha Unit Book 4)

Unhinged Omega: Chapter 15

The ground trembles beneath my feet as I storm across the tarmac, my jaw clenched so tight I can feel a muscle twitching. Lex jogs to keep up, that mangy mutt of hers loping alongside her and barking the whole damn time like she’s trying to give me news too.

‘How long has this been going on?’ I snarl, not slowing my pace.

‘Fuck if I know,’ Lex pants. ‘The pit was fine a few hours ago, then one of the other guys brought it to my attention. Thought it was just throwing another tantrum at first, but then—’

A bone-rattling roar cuts her off, and I feel it in my fucking teeth. We round the corner of a storage unit, and I freeze.

‘Holy shit.’

The pit is… wrong. Misshapen. One side bulges outward like a tumor, the earth churned up and scattered in massive clumps. And there, in the center of the chaos, looms the Knight, head and shoulders above the edge of the goddamn pit.

The Knight’s massive frame is coated in mud and grime, but those eerie blue eyes still glow with unholy light from the iron mask. As I watch, he slams his metal fist into the outer edge of the part of the pit he’s dug away. The ground shakes and a shower of dirt rains down on him.

But the fucker isn’t digging, not in any methodical sense. It’s pure, primal rage. Each blow sends more earth cascading down, widening the pit. And with each strike, he’s closer to the tower.

To her.

‘Boss!’ Diesel’s panicked voice snaps me out of my daze. He comes sprinting up, out of breath and wild-eyed. ‘We tried to stop it, but—’

‘You tried?’ I cut him off, my voice dripping with disdain. ‘What the fuck does that mean? Did you use the chains? The gas? The fucking tranq guns?’

Diesel shifts nervously. ‘Well, see, the thing is—’

Another ear-splitting roar drowns him out. I whirl back toward the pit just in time to see the Knight lunge upward. His metal claws dig into the loosened earth, and for one heart-stopping moment, I think the fucker’s actually going to haul himself out.

He’s close, that’s for damn sure.

‘Fuck,’ I mutter, raking a hand through my hair. ‘Fuck fuck fuck!’

‘My thoughts exactly,’ Lex drawls.

I round on her, jabbing a finger at her scarred face. ‘This isn’t a fucking joke. If that thing gets loose—’

‘If?’ Diesel pipes up, his voice cracking. ‘Don’t you mean when?’

I grab him by the front of his shirt, hauling him close. ‘Choose your next words very carefully,’ I growl.

His eyes go wide. ‘I just meant… well, look at it! Nothing’s stopped it so far. Maybe we should, I don’t know, evacuate?’

I shove him away in disgust. ‘Evacuate to where, dipshit? In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in the middle of a goddamn wasteland.’

‘What about the bunker?’ Lex suggests hesitantly. ‘The one under the old—’

‘We are not abandoning this base,’ I snarl. ‘Do you have any idea how much firepower we’ve got stockpiled here? How many years I’ve spent building this operation?’

How much I stand to lose if I walk away now?

‘Okay, so it’s not that we can’t evacuate,’ Diesel points out. ‘Just that you don’t want to?’

‘He has a point,’ Lex muses.

‘You’re both going into the pit if you say another word,’ I mutter, raking a hand through my hair as my other hand goes instinctively to my pocket for the crumpled pack of synth cigarettes I keep for special occasions when I need to calm the fuck down. My hands are already trembling by the time I manage to get one out. It’s bent, but it’ll do.

I light it and turn back to the pit, taking a long drag and watching as the Knight continues its relentless assault on the walls. Each blow sends tremors through the ground, and I swear I can feel them in my bones.

‘We need to contain it,’ I mutter, more to myself than the idiots around me. ‘Reinforce the walls, maybe. Or dig the pit deeper.’noveldrama

‘Uh, boss?’ Diesel’s nervous voice grates on my nerves. ‘About that…’

I close my eyes, counting backward from ten. ‘What now?’

‘Well, see, we kinda used up all the concrete mix on that statue Mikey and Lex wanted to make, and—’

My eyes snap open. ‘You did what?’

The moron in question actually perks up. ‘Oh yeah! Wanna see it? It’s not quite finished, but I think it really captures your essence.’

Before I can tell her exactly where they can shove their ‘art,’ the ground bucks beneath our feet. I stumble, catching myself on the edge of a storage container. When I look up, my heart nearly stops.

The Knight is climbing.

He’s found purchase in the loosened earth, those lethal claws digging in as he hauls his massive frame upward. It’s slow, agonizing progress, but it’s working.

‘Get the chains!’ I roar, already sprinting toward the nearest storage unit. ‘The big ones! And someone find me a fucking rocket launcher!’

My men scatter, Lex barking orders as they run. I yank open the door to the unit, my hands shaking as I dig through crates of weaponry. Everything’s already turning hazy and violet around the corners of my vision. Maybe taking a goddamn hit off a synth cigarette wasn’t the best idea, but everything going on has me at the verge of mentally snapping and I was running out of fucking options.

Where the fuck is it?

A high-pitched scream cuts through the air, and I whirl around. One of the men—some new recruit whose name I can’t be bothered to remember—is backing away from the pit, his face white as a sheet.

‘It’s looking at me!’ he wails. ‘Oh god, it saw me!’

I grab the nearest object—a crowbar—and hurl it at him. It clangs off his helmet and he yelps.

‘Pull yourself together!’ I snarl. ‘Unless you want to be its first snack when it gets out!’

Some alpha.

As if on cue, another roar shakes the compound. I turn back to the pit, and my blood runs cold.

The Knight is halfway out of the damn pit now. And there’s an intensity in his burning blue gaze that I recognize all too well.

Hunger.

Need.

Mine.

‘Oh, you’ve got to be fucking kidding me,’ I mutter.

A clang of metal on metal draws my attention. Lex and some other alphas are dragging massive chains toward the pit, each link as thick as my arm. But even as they approach, I know it won’t be enough.

Nothing will be enough.

The Knight is going to get out. And when he does, I know he’s going straight for her.

A flicker of movement on the road leading to the compound catches my eye. A cloud of dust, kicked up by an approaching vehicle.

What the fuck now?

I snatch a pair of binoculars from a nearby crate, focusing on the incoming threat. It takes me a moment to make out details through the dust and grime, but when I do, a fresh wave of rage washes over me.

I know that long blond hair streaming in the wind. And I only know one fucker flashy enough to ride a golden motorcycle.

‘You have got to be shitting me.’

Of all the godforsaken times for that preening peacock to show his face, it has to be now? When I’m dealing with a rabid eight-foot killing machine, a heat-crazed omega, and the very real possibility that my entire operation is about to go up in flames?

I hurl the binoculars aside, not even wincing at the crunch of broken glass. A headache pounds behind my eye, and I can feel a muscle twitching in my jaw.

‘Lex!’ I bark. ‘You deal with this shit. I’ve got a pretty boy to turn into roadkill.’

She looks up from where she’s attaching a chain to a massive steel stake, her scarred face twisted in confusion. ‘But boss, what about—’

‘I don’t care if you have to call in every merc from here to the Capital. Just keep that thing in the fucking pit!’ I snap as I storm toward the plume of dust kicked up by the asshole on the golden bike.

Maybe I’ll get lucky and he’ll give me an excuse to put a bullet between those pretty blue eyes of his.

Knowing Raven, it’s only a matter of time.
