Unhinged Omega: Chapter 36
I lead them through the winding tunnels toward my office, hyper-aware of the massive alpha’s heavy footsteps behind me. The sound echoes off the concrete walls, making the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Every instinct I have screams at me not to turn my back on something that dangerous.
But I keep walking.
The omega—Cosima—stays close to the mutant’s side, her delicate hand resting on his arm like she’s trying to keep him calm.
Beauty and the beast.
It would be almost cute if he wasn’t capable of tearing through my entire security force without breaking a sweat.
I catch vague whiffs of some godawful cologne clearly meant to mask her omega scent, but that’s about all I can catch with my sense of smell thoroughly fucked. Not that it matters. Even without being able to scent her, I can see why Raven’s so obsessed.
She’s the most stunning omega I’ve ever seen.
All lush curves and moonlight-silver hair, with striking violet eyes that seem to pierce right through you. Right now, those eyes are boring holes in my back while she rapidly whispers something angry under her breath that sounds suspiciously like a goddamn curse.
She’s definitely Vrissian—the muted accent when she speaks confirms it—so for all I know, she’s casting some ancient folk magic passed down through the generations on me. I’ve always found that accent sexy as hell, but it sounds a little different when I’m pretty sure she’s trying to turn me into a toad.
Good thing I’m not superstitious.
We reach my office and I unlock the heavy metal door, gesturing for them to enter. ‘After you.’
Cosima eyes me warily but steps inside, the mutant alpha ducking his massive frame to follow. His new ornate mask catches the light as he moves, and I have to admit it’s an improvement over the crude iron slab I glimpsed at the airfield. Almost makes him look noble instead of nightmarish.
Almost.
I close the door behind us and move to sit behind my desk, trying to project an air of casual authority despite the way my pulse picks up when those feral blue eyes fix on me. ‘Please, have a seat.’
‘I’ll stand,’ Cosima says coldly.
The alpha rumbles in agreement, positioning himself slightly in front of her. Protective. Possessive, even.
Interesting.
‘Suit yourself,’ I say with a shrug, leaning back in my chair. ‘I’ll get straight to the point then. Someone very important to me has been looking for you.’
Her spine straightens, hope flickering in her eyes. ‘Who?’
‘His name is Raven. Pretty alpha, long blond hair, dramatic as fuck?’ I watch her face carefully. ‘Ring any bells?’
The hope in her eyes dims immediately. Whoever she was expecting, it wasn’t him. ‘The one you tackled at the airfield?’ she asks sarcastically, and I notice her accent gets stronger when she’s annoyed.
‘That’s the one.’
She studies me for a moment, head tilted slightly. ‘Is he your mate?’
The question catches me completely off guard. Takes me a moment to realize she’s dead serious. ‘What? No, he’s not my fucking mate. What the hell are you talking about?’
She just shrugs, but I can tell she doesn’t believe me.
‘Look,’ I growl, trying to get this conversation back on track even though I’m plenty annoyed myself now. ‘The point is, I can’t let you leave.’
The mutant alpha’s own growl fills the room instantly, making the pens on my desk rattle. There’s fresh blood on his metal claws. Probably from the half-dead merchant my men found stuffed in a dumpster earlier. A particularly important merchant, too.
Today’s just full of fucking headaches.
I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. ‘If your pet mutant tries anything, my men won’t let either of you leave alive. They’ll shoot first and ask questions later. I’d rather not have to explain to Raven why I had to put down his omega, but I will if I have to.’
‘I am not his omega,’ Cosima snarls, her accent thick with rage. ‘And if you think your men’s bullets will do anything against the Knight, you’re delusional.’
The Knight? Is that what she calls him?noveldrama
‘Maybe not,’ I concede. ‘But they might slow him down long enough for the gas to kick in. The vents in here aren’t just for show.’
Her eyes narrow dangerously. ‘You have no idea who you’re dealing with.’
I stare at the omega across my desk, unmoved by her attempts at intimidation. She’s got fire, I’ll give her that. Most omegas would be cowering by now. But she just glares at me with that fierce gaze, chin raised defiantly.
‘My father will have your head for this,’ she hisses. ‘He’ll burn this entire shitty market of yours to the ground.’
I can’t help but laugh. ‘Arthur Maybrecht? Please. That snake doesn’t give a shit about anything but his own ass. Why do you think he had the Ghosts snatch you in the first place?’
Of course Raven had to go and imprint like a fucking baby bird on the daughter of one of the most important—and infamous—alphas in Reinmich. He can never do anything halfway.
Her eyes widen slightly before narrowing again. ‘How do you know about that?’
‘I make it my business to know things,’ I say with a shrug, leaning back in my chair. Especially when those things intersect with the one person I still give a shit about, despite my best attempts. ‘Information is power out here in the Outer Reaches. And right now, the most valuable piece of information I have is that you’re exactly where you need to be.’
Cosima’s lip curls in disgust. ‘And where is that? Your little dungeon? Are you going to keep me as a pet for your pretty boyfriend?’
‘Raven is not my fucking boyfriend,’ I growl, my patience wearing thin. ‘And this isn’t a dungeon. Think of it more as… protective custody.’
The Knight shifts beside her. The contrast between the serene features of his noble mask and the burning rage in the scarred blue eyes behind it is nothing short of disturbing, even by my standards. His metal claws flex as he growls, gouging the shit out of my concrete wall with an ominous screech that sets my teeth on edge.
Great. Another repair bill.
‘I don’t need your protection,’ Cosima spits. ‘And I certainly don’t need to be kept like some prized pet for your pet.’
‘Look, princess,’ I say, trying to keep my voice level. She curls her lip at me in clear agitation. ‘I get that you’re not thrilled about the situation. But Raven is convinced you’re his mate, and until I can figure out what the fuck is going on, you’re staying put.’
She laughs, the sound sharp and bitter. ‘Is this how all alphas court their supposed mates out here? Through kidnapping and imprisonment?’
‘No one’s imprisoning you,’ I protest, even though that’s exactly what I’m doing. And the answer to her question is yes, that usually is how it goes out here. Pretty much anywhere other than Surhiira, where the favored method is an endless stream of progressively over-the-top gifts and love poems. ‘I’ll make sure you’re comfortable. You’ll have everything you need.’
‘Everything I need?’ she repeats incredulously. ‘Like what? Your boyfriend’s dick?’
‘For the last fucking time, he’s not my boyfriend!’ I snarl, slamming my fist on the desk. The pens rattle. So does the Knight’s deepening growl. It makes my head throb. This is one hell of a migraine I’ve got brewing, emanating from my eye socket. ‘And this isn’t about ‘claiming’ anyone,’ I say through my teeth. ‘This is about keeping everyone alive long enough to sort this mess out.’
Cosima crosses her arms, looking thoroughly unimpressed. ‘Right. Because locking me up is clearly the best way to handle this situation. Tell me, does your not-boyfriend often send you to kidnap omegas for him?’
‘You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about,’ I growl, rising from my chair. The Knight immediately steps forward, but Cosima places a restraining hand on his arm. ‘Raven is… complicated. But he’s not just some random alpha. He’s family.’
‘Family?’ She arches one perfect silver eyebrow. ‘Is that what they’re calling it these days? Is this a Daddy-slash-boy situation?’
I bristle because her words are too damn close to comfort, considering what Raven calls me, but I remind myself there’s no way she could know that.
Hopefully.
Before I can respond, a sharp beeping cuts through the tension. The security monitor on my desk flashes red and my blood runs cold as I read the alert.
SECURITY BREACH
PRISONERS ESCAPED
ALERT LEVEL: CRITICAL
‘Fuck,’ I mutter, already reaching for my gun.
My radio crackles to life. ‘Boss!’ One of my guards’ panicked voice fills the room. ‘The prisoners… they’re gone! Both of them!’
Of course they are.
Because nothing in my life can ever be simple when it comes to that golden-haired menace.
Or Nikolai fucking Vlakov.
And now they’re together.
Again.
What do you think?
