Chapter 244
Chapter 244:
I clenched my jaw, refusing to give her more than I already had.
Vanessa let out a humorless laugh. “You don’t have to say it, but I know I’m right.”
I studied her, trying to make sense of why she actually cared.
“Why are you helping me?” I asked, suspicion creeping into my tone.
She hesitated. For a brief second, something flickered in her eyes—guilt? Regret? Then she turned back to the road, her lips pressing into a thin line.
“Because maybe,” she finally said, her voice quieter, “this will make Alex forgive me.”
I frowned. “Forgive you for what?”
Vanessa swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the wheel. “For not doing anything to stop Eliza from hurting Liam.”
My breath hitched.
Alex had cut her off because of it, never looking back. She’d made her choice then, and she’d lived with it. But now? She thought this would make up for it?
I shook my head. “If you need Alex’s forgiveness that badly, don’t you think you should be apologizing to me, too?”
Her breathing came out in a sharp exhalation, and her nostrils flared. “Don’t push it, Raina,” she snapped, her eyes flicking toward me with irritation. “I said I’d help you. That doesn’t mean I’m suddenly your best friend.”
Typical Vanessa.
I barked out a humorless laugh and turned my attention to the window, watching as the city blurred past.
The more we neared the Graham mansion, the more my stomach twinged with unease. Then I saw them.
Police cars. Flashing lights. A few officers standing outside the estate, murmuring amongst each other. Panic stirred in my gut.
My mind froze in terror. The first thought that came to mind: Did someone die?

Vanessa slammed on the brakes to slow down as she drove by, squinting through her window at the scene. “Is this why you were in a hurry?” she asked.
I shook my head, attempting to dislodge the block that had formed in my throat. “I don’t know,” I hardly whispered.
My eyes searched for Alex. He was to the side with one of the officers, frozen still but for his clenched jaw. Dominic was a few feet away, speaking to another officer but looking devastated.
Something was wrong.
I had time to process that before Alex’s head whipped toward mine.
For a couple of seconds, he simply stared.
Shock crossed his face first. Then, anger.noveldrama
Just like that, I knew—he wasn’t happy to see me.
ALEXANDER
Faith was gone.
The words echoed in my mind, a deafening sound repeating over and over until I could barely think.
Her bodyguards had managed to send a final report before everything went silent. They were ambushed. Faith had been taken. By the time reinforcements arrived, the guards were dead—slaughtered like they were nothing more than obstacles in the way.
Something inside Dominic snapped when he heard that.
