A Divorce He Regrets

Chapter 253

Chapter 253:

But I couldn’t let Faith suffer because of me.

I placed a hand over my chest, trying to steady the erratic rise and fall of my breath.

What the hell was I going to do?

I was beyond angry. Words couldn’t capture the fury coursing through me, burning like liquid fire, tightening my muscles and knotting my veins as I watched Raina storm out. This was exactly what I had feared, exactly what I had suspected. And for her to be foolish enough to leave the safest place she could have been…

She walked quickly, each step purposeful, and I matched her pace. My voice was sharp as I called out to her.

“Raina, stop!”

She didn’t slow down. Not even a step.

She slammed her door behind her, shutting me out before I could catch up.noveldrama

I ground my teeth, jaw clenched. My pulse hammered in my temples as I grabbed the door handle, twisting it. Locked.

“Raina!” I pounded my fist against the door, the sound echoing down the hallway. No response. I banged again, harder this time. “Open the door!”

Still nothing.

I sucked in a deep breath, trying to push down the burning anger in my chest. I was furious, but beneath that, something I didn’t want to admit churned—worry.

I pressed my forehead against the door, closing my eyes. Damn it, why did she have to be so stubborn?

Just hours earlier, she could hardly sit up straight without swaying. The fever had drained her, leaving her pale, skin hot to the touch. I had seen the doctor’s concerned expression as he took her temperature.

“It’s high,” he’d said. “She needs rest.”

And yet, here she was, locking herself away, wallowing in whatever guilt was consuming her.

I dragged a hand down my face, exhaling sharply. If she wanted space, fine. But I wasn’t going anywhere.

I turned away from the door, heading downstairs, though the frustration still boiled beneath my skin from seeing Vanessa standing on the bottom step.

She was watching me now, her usual caution in place, but I could see the self-satisfied smile tugging at the corners of her lips. I didn’t let her get a word in.

I cut in sharply. “What the hell were you thinking?” My voice was low and pointed, every word dripping with annoyance.

Her lips pressed together before she lifted her chin, arms crossed tightly over her chest. “I did it so you’d forgive me.”

I let out a short, bitter laugh. “Forgive you?” I shook my head, incredulous. “Vanessa, you let Eliza hurt Liam. You think one good deed wipes that away?”

She flinched, and for a second, I almost felt bad. Almost.

But then she squared her shoulders, clinging to whatever defense she’d built up in her mind. “I was just trying to help,” she muttered.

I sneered. “You don’t get to play the hero now. You should have left this alone. You should have stayed out of it.” My voice dropped lower, cold and firm. “And that includes Dominic. Don’t even think about getting involved with him in any of this.”

Her gaze flickered with something—hesitation, guilt. But I pressed on.

“You know about Faith being kidnapped.” It wasn’t a question. Vanessa had heard everything.

She swallowed before nodding. “I know.”
