A Divorce He Regrets

Chapter 257

Chapter 257:

Footsteps echoed from the kitchen, and a moment later, she stood in the doorway, frowning. “What’s with all the yelling?” Relief hit me like a sledgehammer.

I crossed the room in two strides and caught her, pulling her into a tight hug.

“What—Alex!” she gasped. “I can’t breathe!”

I loosened my grip just enough to look at her. She was okay. She was here.

She looked up at me, scowling. “What’s wrong with you?”

I exhaled, shaking my head. “I woke up, and you weren’t here. I thought—” I trailed off, not wanting to voice the worst that had crossed my mind.

Her expression softened. “I just went to make breakfast.”

I rested my head against hers for a moment before letting her go. “Next time, tell me.”

“Tell you what? That I was going to make eggs?” she teased, but her voice was soft.

I glanced at her. “Exactly that.”

A groggy voice cut us both off. “You two done having your little moment, or can I go back to sleep?”

I turned to see Dominic sitting up, rubbing his face. He looked like hell.

“You’re up,” I said.

“Unfortunately,” he muttered. He ran a hand through his hair and then looked at me. “You heard anything?”

Before I could respond, Raina’s gaze snapped to me, her interest piqued. I paused. I would have preferred to keep her in the dark, but she was in this deep now. There was no hiding it anymore. I exhaled. “They found the van.”

Her hands clenched at her hips. “And?”

I hesitated again, then met her eyes. “But not Faith.”

Her shoulders sagged slightly, but she just nodded.

Without another word, she turned and disappeared back into the kitchen.

Dominic and I exchanged a look before she reappeared a minute later with two plates of food. She set them in front of us. “Eat something,” she said firmly. “You’ll need your energy.”

I looked down at my plate, then back at her. “You need to eat too,” I told her.

She shook her head. “I’m not hungry.”noveldrama

I frowned but didn’t push the issue. She wasn’t going to force food down now, and I wasn’t about to sit there arguing about it. Dominic grumbled as he reached for his fork, stabbing at the eggs. “I’m too hungover for this shit.”

I just shook my head and began to eat. One way or another, we were going to need our strength.

The sound of silverware clinking against the plates was the only noise filling the room as we ate in uncomfortable silence. Swallowing each bite felt like a chore, but I gulped the food down. Raina was right—we needed our strength. We had no idea what today would bring.

Just as I swallowed another bite, the front door creaked open. I lifted my head, tensing immediately, as I saw the detective step inside.

His beady eyes scanned the room and settled on Raina.

“Who’s she?” he asked, jerking a thumb toward Raina, his tone curt.

Dominic barely looked up from his plate. “My sister.” Flat, uninterested. “What’re you here for?”

The detective took another step inside, his eyes sweeping over all three of us before fixing on me. “I want to know what you know.”

I dropped my fork and met his gaze head-on. “And I told you before, we know nothing.”
