Chapter 268
Chapter 268:
The cold, smooth floor pressed into my skin, but I hardly felt it. I locked eyes with Vanessa, letting her see just how desperate I was. My pride didn’t matter right now. Humiliation didn’t matter. Nothing did except getting her to help. I understood. My voice was raw and thick with emotion as I begged, “Please, Vanessa. Faith was kidnapped because of me. If it weren’t for me, she wouldn’t be in this mess.” My throat constricted, but I pushed through. “Nathan’s not going to let her go. You know that as well as I do.”
Vanessa looked at me, and for a moment, I thought she was going to deny it again. Her lips parted like she was going to protest, to spew out another reason why this was a terrible idea. But then she paused, her jaw tensing as battle crossed her face.noveldrama
I could see it happening. The moment she caved.
She let out a slow, heavy breath, raking a hand through her hair before muttering, “Fine.” Her voice was low, reluctant, but it didn’t matter. “It’s going to be hard, but I’ll try.”
Relief crashed through me so strongly that my body almost sagged from the weight of it. My pounding heart slammed against my ribs, and the knot in my stomach started to loosen—just a little.
“Thank you,” I whispered, the words barely making it past my lips.
Vanessa shook her head, already looking like she regretted it, but she didn’t take it back. Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked out, leaving me alone with the unbearable weight of what I was about to do.
As soon as the door clicked shut behind her, I let out a shaky breath and pressed a trembling hand against my chest. This was happening.
I was going to save Faith.
I sat on the edge of my bed and waited. My fingers tapped against my knee as my mind whipped through every possible scenario. Would Vanessa signal me somehow? Would she come back and try to sneak me out? Or was I just supposed to watch for an opportunity and take it?
Minutes dragged on to what felt like hours, my eyelids turning into heavy stones. The tiredness of it all—the fear and planning and relentless worry—sat upon me in a heavy fog. I don’t recall deciding to, but sometime after, I must’ve dozed off.
A shrill click rocked me from slumber.

My eyelids snapped open, body freezing as my mind strove to piece things back in order.
The door.
I shot up from the bed, my heartbeat pounding in my ears. My legs moved across the room before I could think. My fingers closed around the handle, and when I turned it, the door opened without any resistance.
Unlocked.
Vanessa did that.
A shaky smile tugged at my lips, but I didn’t waste another second. Slipping into the dimly lit hallway, I moved quickly, my bare feet silent against the cool floor. I didn’t look back. I didn’t stop.
I took the less-trodden paths, my heart hammering in my ears, and went around the house to avoid both Alex and Dominic. If they spotted me, it would be over before it even started. I had to be careful.
I had already gleaned from Nathan’s final message where I needed to go. And I wasn’t going to back down.
The car was parked right where Nathan said it would be, a few feet away from where I had stopped standing, its dark windows reflecting the dim light the streetlights threw across its flat body. My heart raced against my ribs as I stared at it, frozen for just a moment. This was it. The moment I got inside, there would be no turning back. No second chances. No escape until Nathan decided to let me go—if he even planned to.
I clenched my fists and exhaled slowly, pushing air into my lungs. Fear wouldn’t help me now. Hesitation wouldn’t either. Faith needed me. I had to do this.
