Chapter 186
Chapter 186:.
Mrs. Hunt got angry as soon as Raymond said that. She replied, “Pete is not autistic, Raymond! Don’t you dare talk nonsense.”
Raymond curved his lip in disdain. “Yes, yes, Pete is not autistic. He just doesn’t like talking to people, that’s all. Gee, he won’t be able to keep avoiding talking to people when he takes over the company in the future, will he?”
Roger said, “Don’t say that, Dad. Who knows, maybe he’ll come around when he grows up.”
Chester couldn’t realize that Pete was being teased. He also didn’t recognize that the little girl was his leader, and thought she was his quiet, reticent little nephew, so he gave them a piece of his mind and said, “Yeah, she’ll be fine when she grows up!”
However, Raymond scoffed and said, “That’s what everyone said when he was a baby, but you don’t see his condition improving in the last few years either…. But I’m worrying for nothing, of course, because I’m sure Justin will have it all worked out well for the company in the future, won’t he?”
Then he looked at Fatty and chided him. “And so will you, Fatty. Don’t just study all the time, what’s the use of being so academic? All that studying has made you stupid. What matters most as a leader is eloquence! How can you make people trust and believe in you if you’re not eloquent?”
He was demeaning Pete both overtly and covertly.
All the other Hunts looked at Pete as they heard what he was saying.
Indeed, what good was a genius if he was autistic?
Seeing his words having an effect, Raymond immediately became rather smug.noveldrama
Roger, however, narrowed his eyes.
At past family dinners, Pete had skipped them all and, if he attended, Justin always lost his temper when someone mentioned the words ‘mild autism’.
However, why was he silent this time?
Could it be that…?
He was still wondering when the little boy in Justin’s arms called out sweetly, “Hi, great-grandma!”
Roger, “?”
Raymond’s jaw dropped, too. He stared at the little boy in Justin’s arms in disbelief and said, “Is that you who just spoke, Pete?”
Cherry rolled her eyes and looked at Justin. Then, in her young but clear voice, she asked, “Is that grandpa deaf or blind, Dad? Why are his ears and eyes so bad? Since our family is so rich, you need to have the doctor take a look at him.”
The corners of Justin’s lips curved into a smile. His usually distant countenance seemed rather relaxed. He looked at Raymond and replied calmly, “He’s very old, so he can’t see or hear anything clearly.”
Raymond, “!!!”
Cherry replied adorably, “Ah, I see!”.
As for Mrs. Hunt, she was so excited to hear Cherry’s voice that her eyes reddened. She wanted to reach out and take her in her arms, but when she thought of the little boy being the one who most detested physical contact with others, she retracted her arms and asked with a smile, “Is Pete talking yet? Has he recovered?”
Justin lowered his eyes dispassionately and fell silent. Instead, he put his daughter down.
As soon as Cherry’s feet touched the ground, she ran to Mrs. Hunt. The little figure plunged into the old woman’s arms and cried adorably and tenderly, “Great-grandmother!”
Not only was the little fellow sweet and tender, but ‘he’ was at last willing to let her hold him.
Mrs. Hunt became even more excited, so much so that even her hands began to tremble. She let out an excited sound of recognition and then, without a second thought, took off a ring she was wearing and placed it in Cherry’s hands. He said, “Here, this is for you, Pete!”.
Everyone present was shocked at the spectacle.
Mrs. Hunt’s ring was made of the finest quality jadeite, which was only formed in hundreds of thousands of years, AND it was worth over ten million dollars! Elder Mr. Hunt had given it to her when they were married back then!
At that time, they had said it was to be passed on to future generations as a family heirloom.
The old lady had also been urging Justin to get married all this time, so she could gift the ring to her daughter-in-law. It was a symbol of her status as Mrs. Hunt.
Why had she given the ring to Pete in a moment of excitement?
Raymond panicked. He took a step forward and said with a smile, “Look at that knucklehead of yours, Mom. This is a woman’s ring; why would you give it to Pete?”.
The old lady looked at him and replied with a smile, “Pete can keep it and give it to his wife in the future then!”.
In other words, she was saying that Pete’s wife would be Mrs. Hunts in the future. In that case, Pete’s position as head of the family was not in doubt!
The old lady was supporting Pete!
Raymond frowned and looked at Fatty with dissatisfaction. Then he said, “You mustn’t be biased, Mom. Since you’ve given that to Pete, what are you going to give Fatty?”.
Fatty also looked at her expectantly.
Mrs. Hunt looked at him and said with a smile, “Fatty can ask his Uncle Justin if there’s anything he wants! Justin is rich! And he’s the head of the family, too.”
Raymond’s expression darkened even more.
Roger also lowered his gaze.
Seeing that the two were no longer creating any more trouble, Mrs. Hunt finally looked at Cherry and said, “Put the ring away, Pete.”
Cherry was quick to say, “It’s too precious great-grandmother. I can’t accept it.”
“One should not refuse gifts from one’s elders. Just take it.”
Unconsciously, Cherry wanted to look for Nora, but suddenly realized Mom wasn’t there, so she looked at Justin instead.
Justin looked down and smiled. Then he stepped forward, took the ring from Cherry and said, “Since Great-Grandma gave it to you, accept it. But you’re still young, so you can’t wear it yet. We’ll let your mommy wear it first.”
Mommy?
Mrs. Hunt’s eyes lit up as soon as she said that. She asked, “What mommy?”
The others looked at him, too.
Was this man, who had made the decision to remain a bachelor all his life, finally going to get married?
Raymond and Roger instantly felt a sense of crisis.
If Justin married and had two more children, wouldn’t Fatty have even less chance?
They both frowned.
Suddenly, Raymond said, “All right, the adults are going to talk, why don’t you two go off to the side and play a game?”
He looked at Fatty after he spoke.
Fatty immediately understood what he meant. He stepped forward, held Cherry’s hand and said, “Come on, Pete, why don’t we play? This cell phone game is very popular now. Anyone can play it as long as they’re not too stupid. Surely you know how to play, don’t you?”
It was common knowledge that Pete was a nerd whose only hobby was studying. This meant he would definitely suck at games.
Cherry, “?”
Before he could speak, Mrs. Hunt panicked and said, “Kids shouldn’t play too many games!”
Roger smiled and said, “That’s quite a wrong statement, Grandma. Games can also reflect a person’s intelligence. Besides, people who only know how to memorize their books and don’t exercise practical application in their studies tend to have one-track minds.”
He looked at Justin and said, “Isn’t Justin himself someone who excels in all aspects? I’m sure Pete is someone like that too, so let’s let him play!”.
The way he was talking sounded like people who were bad at games were really stupid!
The corners of Justin’s lips curved into a smile when he heard what she said.
Wasn’t that game Fatty mentioned exactly the one Cherry was broadcasting live?
He had long since discovered that Cherry was the best player on the local server in that game.
On the other side, Fatty had already pulled out his cell phone. He asked, “Do you have an account? Come on, let’s play a round! I can help in the game as long as you’re not particularly stupid! This game is the best game to reflect whether someone is smart or not.”
