Unhinged Omega: A Dark Reverse Harem Omegaverse Romance (Ghost Alpha Unit Book 4)

Unhinged Omega: Chapter 21

My lungs burn as I sprint toward the tower, desperation fueling every step. The chaos around me fades to background noise—screams, explosions, the deafening roar of the monster—all of it meaningless compared to my singular goal.

Her.

Cosima.

My goddess.

‘Stop firing, you fucking morons!’ I yell at Nikolai’s men as another rocket whistles past, far too close to the tower for comfort. ‘You’ll bring the whole damn thing down!’

They ignore me, of course. I’m just another alpha to them, not their precious leader. The one who’s failed spectacularly at keeping my moonlight safe.

And if I’m being honest, I’ve always been better at controlling other alphas with money and sex than with the raw commanding force that comes naturally to most. Just one of many reasons I’m sure my goddess is going to reject me once I get her out of this hellhole.

But it doesn’t matter. All that matters is getting her away from Nikolai and the half-metal Superman who’s presently tearing apart Geo’s fucking tank like it’s made of cardboard.

At least that’s buying us some time. I just hope it’s enough.

The base of the tower looms before me, scarred and battered from the chaos. Jagged holes gape in the concrete, spilling twisted rebar and shattered glass onto the tarmac. I dodge the debris, my eyes locked on the nearest entrance.

Just a few more steps.

Almost there.

The door flies open.

Time stops.

She stands there, silhouetted in the doorway, and I swear my heart forgets how to beat. Silver hair cascades down her back like a waterfall of moonlight, framing a face that puts the finest Surhiiran sculptures to shame. Violet eyes, wide with a mix of fear and confusion, lock onto mine.

My breath catches in my throat.

Gods above and below.

If I thought she was stunning before, that fleeting glimpse in the club… it was nothing compared to this. My memory, vivid as it is, couldn’t do her justice. She’s more than beautiful. She’s ethereal. Otherworldly.

Divine.

‘My goddess,’ I whisper, the words slipping out unbidden.

Confusion flickers across her face, quickly replaced by wariness as I reach for her. I see her muscles tense, those delicate hands curling into claws. She’s about to lash out, to defend herself from yet another alpha trying to claim her.

I want to tell her I’m different. That I would never hurt her. That I’m here to save her. To worship her. To give her the world if she’ll let me.

But before I can utter a word, a freight train slams into me from the side.

The world spins as I’m sent flying, tumbling across the unforgiving tarmac. Gravel bites into my skin, tearing at my clothes. When I finally skid to a stop, I find myself pinned beneath a mountain of muscle and righteous fury.

Geo.

‘Fuck!’ I snarl, thrashing against his iron grip. He’s got my wrists pinned above my head, his bulk pressing me into the ground. Any other time, this position might be the start of a delightful encounter, but right now, all I can think about is the silver-haired goddess slipping away.

I crane my neck, trying to see around Geo’s broad shoulders. There—a flash of moonlight. She’s running, fleeing the chaos. Straight for the forest at the edge of the compound.

Most of the trees have been burned out by the war, and probably a fair share of chaos from Nikolai’s band of idiots, too, but there’s still plenty for her to disappear into.

Plenty for her to get lost in.

‘Let me up!’ I demand, bucking against Geo’s weight as panic sets in anew. ‘She’s getting away! That thing is going to get her!’

Geo doesn’t budge. If anything, he presses down harder. ‘Good,’ he growls. ‘She’ll keep it distracted while we escape.’noveldrama

Is he fucking serious?

Usually, I’m the one pestering him incessantly. I don’t know why he had to choose now to give me a taste of my own medicine.

‘She’s an omega!’ I hiss.

Geo’s expression doesn’t change. ‘Am I supposed to give a shit?’

Something snaps inside me. A snarl rips from my throat, feral and desperate. Too bad it doesn’t translate into the immense physical strength I’d need to throw him off me.

‘She’s my omega!’

That gets his attention.

It’s far from the first time I’ve made that assertion, but his reaction leaves me wondering if it’s the first time he’s actually believed me. Geo freezes, his grip on my wrists loosening just a fraction. I see a flicker of… something in his eye. Frustration, certainly. But there’s more to it. Something I can’t quite place.

Something that looks almost like—

The tower door slams open again, cutting off my train of thought. Nikolai bursts out, his mismatched eyes wild as he scans the area.

‘Which way did she go?’ he demands.

I bare my teeth at him, a growl building in my chest. As if I’d tell him anything. As if I’d help him recapture my moonlight goddess.

But with Geo pinning me, I suppose it’s better someone reaches her. If Nikolai gets to her first, I can just kill him. It’s better than her being ripped apart by that monster, or anything else that’s lurking in those woods.

‘The forest,’ I hiss, managing to wrench one arm free from Geo’s grasp. I point toward the treeline where I last saw that silver hair disappearing.

A whistling sound cuts through the air, followed by a deafening explosion. Heat washes over us as another rocket impacts near the tank. The monster’s enraged roar drowns out even the ringing in my ears.

‘Fuck!’ Nikolai snarls, whirling toward the source of the blast.

I follow his gaze and spot Diesel, that absolute fucking moron, fumbling with a grenade launcher. He must have thought he was helping, trying to take out the monster while he was distracted.

All he’s managed to do is piss the massive alpha off.

The monster’s head snaps around, those eerie blue eyes locking onto our little group. With most of his mask blown away, revealing his heavily scarred face and razor-sharp teeth, the fury in his burning blue gaze is clear. He abandons the wreckage of the tank, each thunderous step bringing him closer.

Well, shit.

‘Truce?’ I croak out, still struggling against Geo’s iron grip as he stares at the monster with a dread that’s utterly foreign on his face.

Nikolai’s lip curls in disgust, but he gives a curt nod. ‘Truce.’

Geo finally releases me and I scramble to my feet. We form a rough semicircle, weapons drawn. It would almost be poetic if it wasn’t so goddamn terrifying. Three alphas who, under any other circumstances, would be at each other’s throats, temporarily united against a common enemy.

The monster charges.

We open fire.

The sound is deafening, a cacophony of gunshots that would drop a small army. Bullets ping off the armor soldered onto the monster’s muscled body, and quite a few sink into his organic flesh, but it’s barely slowing him down.

What the actual fuck is this thing?

‘Aim for the joints!’ Nikolai bellows over the din. ‘Try to slow him down!’

I adjust my aim, targeting the monster’s knees, abdomen, throat, anywhere that looks like a weak point. But it’s like looking for a hinge in a brick wall. A very angry, very mobile brick wall that wants nothing more than to rend us limb from limb.

As I watch the monster shrug off our assault like it’s nothing more than a light rain, I start to understand why Nikolai was keeping him in that pit. He’s not just another escaped experiment or irradiated monstrosity.

He’s a weapon.

A perfect killing machine.

And knowing Nikolai, that’s exactly what he saw. How he sees everything and everyone. Tools to be used. Weapons to be wielded.

It’s probably how he sees Cosima, too.

Just another asset to be exploited.

Over my dead fucking body.

I grit my teeth, emptying another clip into the monster’s face. The bullets ricochet off the remnants of his iron mask, barely leaving a scratch. This isn’t working. We need a new plan, and fast.

That’s when I realize Geo is gone.

I risk a glance around, my heart sinking when I spot him sprinting toward one of the abandoned vehicles at the edge of the compound. So much for loyalty. So much for coming to my rescue. In the end, he’s doing what he always does—looking out for himself.

I tell myself I’m relieved. That it’s better this way. One less complication to deal with.

So why does it feel like my chest is caving in?

‘Looks like your new boyfriend ditched you,’ Nikolai sneers, his voice dripping with mockery even as we struggle to hold off the advancing monster. ‘Or ‘Daddy.”

I bare my teeth at him, shoving down the hurt and focusing on the anger. It’s easier. Always has been.

‘He’s more reliable than you,’ I snap back. ‘At least he didn’t lose the one thing he was supposed to protect. Tell me, Niko, how does it feel to let a single omega slip through your fingers?’

Nikolai’s eyes narrow dangerously. ‘I’d like to see you try to hold onto her,’ he snarls.

Before I can retort, a familiar rumble cuts through the chaos. An engine, growing louder by the second. I whip my head around, searching for the source.

My jaw drops.

There, barreling across the tarmac at breakneck speed, is one of Nikolai’s armored vehicles. And behind the wheel, his face set in a mask of grim determination, is Geo.

My heart does a little flip in my chest.

He didn’t abandon me after all.

He’s got the pedal to the floor, the massive vehicle kicking up a cloud of dust as it hurtles straight for the monster. It’s a crazy plan. Suicidal, even.

It’s exactly the kind of batshit insane thing I would do.

A hysterical laugh bubbles up from my chest. ‘You sexy, crazy bastard,’ I mutter, a grin spreading across my face despite the dire situation.

Nikolai curses beside me, but I barely hear him. My eyes are locked on Geo as he closes the distance. The monster turns, sensing the new threat, but it’s too late.

The armored vehicle slams into him with the force of a freight train.

The impact is thunderous, metal screaming against metal as the beast is sent flying. He crashes into a stack of shipping containers, the whole pile collapsing around him in an avalanche of twisted steel.

For a moment, everything goes quiet.

Then Geo’s voice rings out. ‘Get your ass in the car!’

Hope he realizes I’m just going to hijack the damn thing if he tries to drive away from Cosima and not toward her. I sprint for the vehicle, but I’m barely within reach of the armored door when I catch a glimpse of Nikolai making a mad dash for the forest in the direction my omega ran in.

The sound of metal straining tells me Nikolai’s monster is far from down for the count. And he’s abandoning us to deal with the fallout.

‘That son of a bitch,’ I seethe.

But before I can take so much as a step to go after him, two shots fire off in quick succession. Close enough that for a few seconds, all I can hear is ringing and the sound of my own heartbeat.

Time seems to slow down as I turn around and see the smoking gun in Geo’s hand as he aims out the window toward the forest. My head whips around just as Nikolai drops to his knees, two deep red splotches forming on the back of his shirt, right through the upper middle of his back.

‘No!’ The scream tears from my throat, raw and guttural as I take off running. I hear a car door slam behind me, but I don’t stop. I can’t stop. Not until I reach him.

For years, I’ve fantasized about putting a bullet in Nikolai’s heart. But now that it’s finally happened, I don’t feel relief or triumph or any of the other things I imagined I would.

All I feel is empty.
